As a breast nurse navigator and breast health educator in my community I enjoyed the article you suggested re: African American women and breast cancer. Statistically, white women have greater incidence of breast cancer; however, African American women have a higher mortality rate. There is no doubt in my mind that the reason is simply education, trust, and access to care (ie mammography) and are hence diagnosed with later stage breast cancers. I feel very strongly that these statistics need to be clarified to the African American community. It is often interpreted that because a woman is African American, she has a less chance of developing the disease which gives a false sense of security and may discourage participation with mammography and screening programs.

Your article regarding head of bed position for ventilated patients points out a serious need of these critical patients. Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is a serious complication in this population of patients. We as nurses have the opportunity to attempt preventing VAP and I greatly appreciate this information.

The article about drug calculations is interesting. Not only is having the ability to accurately calculate IV drips important, but so is the ability to program the information correctly into IV pumps and adhering to correct administration. Most recently I have come across a medication error due to incorrectly programming an IV pump. The calculation was correct. This article brings to light the importance of teaching/reviewing with nurses and students how to enter the calculations correctly into equipment being used to deliver the medication to prevent adverse events.
